The kitchen is a place where many spices and flowers join to form delicious meals throughout the day. It is where food is obtained and where creativity occurs. Throughout history, ginger has been an important aspect in our daily lives, but we have not noticed it. It has been a very popular plant ever since farmers first originated it in an island of Southeast Asia with the transportation of it to Hawaii. Yet, most people do not know anything about it. This flowering plant contributes in many beneficial and harmful aspects in life, yet the wide range of information to specify it needs further elaboration.
Ginger is the common name for Zingiber officinale, an angiosperm in the Zingiberaceae family. Zingiberaceae family includes cardamom plants, galangal plants, and the turmeric plants. It is a perennial plant that can grow new stems each year, which can exceed a height of three feet. Its flower buds are pink and white, which bloom into yellow flowers in the spring. Furthermore, the rhizome (the underground piece of the stem) is the part regularly utilized as a flavor. It is frequently called ginger root, or basically ginger.
Ginger is also easy to produce, making it a popular landscaping plant in subtropical climates. Ginger was first found in southern China; however, it also grows in other parts of Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean. Moreover, India is currently the world’s largest commercial producer of ginger. It is a world renown spice. The Indians and Chinese used to use it as a tonic to treat common ailments. By the first century, it took flight to the Mediterranean. Eventually, it became an extremely popular spice in the Italian capital, Rome. An interesting fact is that the use of ginger fell drastically after the fall of the Roman Empire. Ginger has been traded through history of our world longer than any other spice, which means its location and history still grow to this day.
Whether humans use ginger for a cup of comforting tea or just to smell its beautiful aroma, its scientific benefits can shock everyone. It is blessed with antioxidants, yet it’s been utilized more than a hundred years back to this day. It relieves muscle strains, acts as a medicinal substance against inflammation, helps regulates blood sugar, and many more.
But also ginger has many harmful effects. A few people can have mellow reactions including indigestion, diarrhea, and general stomach discomfort. Some studies have shown that women experience more menstrual bleeding when taking ginger. Ginger is possibly safe when it is applied to the skin properly, present moment. It may cause bothering on the skin for certain individuals. Firstly, it may help lower circulatory strain, so a person may encounter wooziness as a symptom. Ginger also contains salicylates, the chemical in aspirin that goes about as a blood slenderer; this can cause issues for individuals with bleeding disorders. Another effect may be the leading to acid reflex: minor reactions may incorporate gas or swelling; if a person has a provocative condition, for example, indigestion, taking multiple grams of ginger in a 24-hour time span may cause extra acid reflex. Reactions are commonly connected with powdered ginger.
Ginger plants are tropical plants that grow best in warm, humid locations. They’re short-day plants that prefer darkness with 2-5 hours only of sunlight each day. They can’t endure places with powerful breezes or ineffectively depleting soil. In fact, ginger roots may develop stunted or distorted roots, or they may just rot if they are in strenuous and infertile soil. The most suitable soil for ginger plants growth is rich, loose, loamy soil. Also, ginger plants should be covered after planting to save the soil moisture. During dry stages or times, ginger plants should not dry out and should be continuously watered. Like potatoes, ginger roots can be cut int sections and planted again; each section should have at least one separate eye. If the ginger is bought from a store, it should be soaked in water for 24 hours to be planted. Last, ginger plants can grow fast and well when ‘fed’ with a fertilizer that contains lots of phosphorus.
In conclusion, ginger is a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root or ginger, is widely used as a spice or even a taste enhancer. We learned during the research that it is also used in many ways in medicine, especially when healing normal diseases like flu and stomach aches. Moreover, it first grew in China, then continued spreading until it reached India, where it is mostly produced. Although it is helpful in many ways, it has some disadvantages like hurting people with blood disorders and indigestion when taken in large amounts. Last but not least, we finally learned how and where it is planted and that it can be planted easily if it grows under perfect conditions.
