After taking the VALS survey, the website concluded that I am in the group of “experiencers” for my primary type and “strivers” for my secondary type. I agree that I am similar to an “experiencer” group. For example, I try to go against the current mainstream, stay up to date on the latest fashion trends, and be sociable. I also try to be spontaneous and do things that I have never done before. Those are all things I would do as a traveler. I don’t necessarily think I would put myself in a “striver” group after reading what that entails. For example, I don’t consider myself to have high unemployment, I don’t enjoy video games, and I don’t rely heavily on public transportation. The VALS survey can be used for many reasons. For example, it can be used for personal use or businesses can understand their consumers by taking the survey. Although the results of the survey were not exactly what I would describe myself, I have faith that they are correctly describing what type of traveler I am.
My profile is someone who needs excitement in their life. Much like the survey results said, I have a lot of energy to pour into my vacations. I would enjoy doing activities that are only available in the tourist destination. I consider myself an unconditional leisure traveler. I enjoy having a lot of freedom when vacationing. With the results I got from the survey, I predict that I would like to visit an exotic location with a resort or nice hotel, kind of like a tropical island. I would look for a place to stay that has information and tips on the best places to eat, shop, and visit in the area. Price would be an important factor in choosing my travel destination. A complimentary breakfast and free WIFI would be a bonus. I would like to visit the nature that the location has to offer or relax on the beach with no set schedule. I would probably try to find some cultural events or attractions on my vacation. Shopping, dining, and entertainment are activities that I would enjoy doing on a vacation as well. One of the things I look forward to on vacation is not having to worry about what to cook. I feel like I would mostly eat out for the duration of the vacation because it is just easier and less stressful. The restaurants I would go to would probably be sit-down restaurants, where you have a server, and it is relaxing. I would eat new foods that I have never tried before or maybe foods that are only available at the specific destination. For example, if the travel destination was a coastal area, I would try some seafood that I have never had before. My mode of transportation to get to the vacation would be by airplane because driving would take too much time away from the vacation. To get around the travel destination I would choose the least stressful way, probably a taxi or Uber.
I would also consider myself a venture traveler. A venturer traveler is always looking for new things to try on vacation, much like myself. I expect to get a takeaway from most vacations, or at least feel like I am leaving a better/different person. I am categorized as someone who seeks self-expression. I see myself as a social vacationer who enjoys communicating with the local people from the tourist destination. I believe that interacting with new people and immersing yourself in a new culture is the only way a vacation should be done. Overall, I expect a vacation to relieve my stress and make me a happier person.
