It is your best friend. You keep it in your hand, pocket, with you at school and you are using it at home. The first thing you do when you wake up in the morning is look at it. Before we go to bed we use it and we can't go a day without it. This is obviously our cell phones. A person will spend over 4 hours each day on their phone. This materialistic object is like our best friend because we often spend more time with it than real people. Phones have become a part of many people’s lives and many can’t go a day without it. It has made life more convenient because it is so easy to contact each other, but it is also very harmful because it can disconnect many people from the world. So the question is this; are phones connecting us to the world or isolating us from it? Cell phones can do both which is why we have to find a balance between time spent on our phone and real-life interactions.

The main reason why most people, including me, will use their phones is to stay connected to the world. Cell phones are quite useful because of the way it connects us to each other through social media and text messaging. Social media is important because it helps us stay in touch with friends and family who live all over the world. Using Instagram and Facebook you can post pictures and always keep up to date with other people's lives. The only way I’ve stayed in touch with my grandma who lives across the world is through social media. A couple of decades ago the most convenient way to do this is through a telegraph. A century ago we would be writing letters that would take a very long time to reach our destination. Social media strengthens relationships but it is also a great way to meet new people. For example, online dating sites have helped a lot of people meet their boyfriend or girlfriend and sometimes even spouse. Other mobile apps like Linkedin have helped keep the world of occupations connected. Finally, cell phones and the internet are always up to date with the newest fashion or news. This helps its users stay connected to the people around us and not miss out on important news or trends. Although phones are connecting us, it is also very likely that they can cause us to be isolated from the world.

Some say cell phones are one of the best inventions that came to the world but others say it is making us more alone because of our inability to look away from our screens. It is so easy to get addicted to our phones especially since we spend endless hours scrolling through our Instagram or Facebook feed. We sit at home on our phones having our self-confidence and ego measured by the number of followers or likes we have. When doing this, we are ignoring those who actually love us. Instead of calling someone, you text them. Instead of getting together for dinner with friends to tell them about your recent vacation, you post the pictures to Instagram. It’s convenient, but it cuts out some of the face-to-face interactions that we need. We spend more than 4 hours on our phones which means that the average adult spends a quarter of their time awake using it. This causes us to forget to pray to God or it distracts us from living a life as a Catholic. Making time for God is very important when living a Catholic lifestyle and often our cell phones distract us from that. Since humans are social creatures when we are disconnected from the world we are more vulnerable to mental illness, including depression and suicide. Cell phones definitely can have a negative impact and result in isolation but it can also connect us. It all comes down to making healthy decisions and having a balance when using your phone.

In today’s world, we can’t imagine life without a phone because of the way it connects us. Phones can be very beneficial as long as there are time limits and restrictions. The average person shouldn’t spend over 2 hours each day on their phone. How disconnected or connected you are depends on how you are using your cell phone. It could be an awesome way to catch up with old friends and meet new people, but it is also a great way to shut out the world. Remember that material object that we treat like our best friend? They come and go but your family and your loyal friends will never. The time spent with friends, family, and God should never be replaced by a phone. Take time to reflect on how your phone is impacting your life and strive to limit phone screen time. Phones can easily make your life better or they can ruin it. It's up to you to make the decision.
