Cinderella is considered one of the all-time favorites, and one of the most popular stories all over the globe. Nonetheless, while watching the movies of Cinderella members of Uzbek culture may find several differences regarding the European culture.

Gender has played an essential role in establishing the different characters in Cinderella. The main characters are mostly in Cinderella are all played by women: Cinderella herself; Cinderella’s dead mother, who is always with her metaphorically instructing her; Cinderella’s step-mother who treats her poorly and tries to destroy her self-esteem; Cinderella’s step-sisters, who are involved in sabotaging her; and the Fairy Godmother, who grants Cinderella her wishes. It can clearly be seen that women played an important role in Cinderella as a lovable character, Cinderella’s mother; cruel characters, Cinderella’s stepmother and step-sisters; or virtuous characters, the Fairy Godmother. In Uzbek culture, which belongs to the Islamic and almost Eastern culture, the role of the females is overrated to the man who is considered much superior. While reading or watching the Cinderella language learners, mainly males including me, may be confused and they find it difficult to digest its internal meaning by neglecting some essential cultural values such as the role of the women. Women are supposed to always obey and be a secondary character in the times of Cinderella I mean in the age of kings and kingdoms, so when English learners of my culture compare it with theirs a huge difference can be found.

Playing an extremely pivotal role in molding not only the self-image but also the belief system of children who are learning English as a foreign language, the story of Cinderella is important. Even the minor details may seem big; for instance, being controlled by an older sibling could bring some sort of anger in their minds. However, children are new to the ideas of anger, jealousy, and other emotions. Therefore, when they see Cinderella crying, but being patient at the same time, they believe that just as the Fairy Godmother rescues Cinderella, their parents will rescue them from their siblings.

While the female gender takes over the main role in Cinderella, the female gender has also been portrayed negatively in the case of Cinderella’s stepmother and step-sisters. They are portrayed as evil. Whereas Cinderella was forced by her stepmother to clean the house and do the household chores, her step-sisters enjoyed all the advantages. Disney also portrays the stepmother and the step-sisters as ugly. In numerous cases in the Uzbek culture stepmother and step sisters are known as good-mannered, and polite; for example, my father had a stepmother and a step-brother. Their relationship was very warm and it was difficult to say that they were step-siblings.

The usage of color as symbolism has played a significant role in the movie made by Disney. A lot of references to color can be observed in Cinderella. Firstly, Disney links the color white with Cinderella and everything that is considered good, while dark colors such as black and brown are associated with everything that is bad. The stepmother and the step-sisters who are negatively portrayed have a comparatively darker complexion in comparison to Cinderella, who is white as milk. In addition, the Fairy Godmother also has white hair. The main figure, Cinderella is blonde and blue-eyed. It is crystal clear that the King’s palace and the doves are also white. The Fairy Godmother’s hair and the King’s hair are all symbols of purity, as they are all white. The coding of black and dark is subtle in the movie, although it undoubtedly exists. Therefore concepts like gender discrimination and racial discrimination are visibly incorporated into the story of Cinderella, and these concepts are in turn seen to mold the minds of the young readers and viewers. Yet, Uzbeks are mostly brown, and swarthy not so milk-white as Cinderella, so some learners may feel discriminated against or may compare themselves, and their family members to the story characters in terms of color. It may be a challenge for the Uzbek English learners.
