The Community has certain rules and cultures, some of which are understandable since they can help bring peace and balance, and some of these rules are inhumane and would set the Community into chaos if they realized how messed up their rules and cultures are. Their rules are quite hard to understand and some are Inhumane, but there is a balance within all of these rules and cultures.

Imagine being in a society where you don't have the ability of genuine emotion or pain. Euthanasia is a way of putting someone out of their misery painlessly, people who take care of babies in the Community sometimes have to kill unhealthy newborns, they don't even feel guilt or slight regret after killing a child since it has been taught to them that it is simply their job, sometimes even people ask for release not knowing that it is death they will face. When people get released elsewhere the Community has a ceremony of release and nobody realizes that release is being killed without pain, instead, they celebrate the person's release. The people in the Community don't have genuine emotions they don't know how it is to love and they don't feel sad or experience the pain of loss after losing someone, instead they have a ceremony where the Community meets and they call it a ceremony of loss this, they chant the person's name in honor of the person, after the ceremony of loss they simply move on and are supposed to forget it happened and not to speak about the person who died. Not being able to feel and express these genuine feelings is both a terrible and good thing since they don't have to deal with the pain of loss or love, but that also goes for the good emotions i.e. they don't love, they like. The giver knows about the pros and cons since he experienced genuine loss when his daughter asked for a release. His daughter Rosemary experienced a very sad and intense emotion which she was not ready for, she asked to be released and to inject herself willfully committing suicide, the Giver knows that these strong emotions being kept away is a good thing since it is best for everyone to not experience this intense amount of pain. People in the Community can't feel others' genuine feelings nor are they able to express how they truly feel. The Giver's daughter was able to show her love towards her father with music and she was able to express happiness with music.

Festivals aren't even held in the Community and the Giver knows how much happiness dancing and music can bring, yet music is nonexistent in the Community and people don't dance and sing which is something that the Giver enjoys and he knows it brings happiness and people can express themselves by dancing or singing with their loved ones.

Diversity has caused many modern problems and it's mostly just because people think that people with different opinions are wrong and for that reason, they get aggressive or defensive. Many modern problems are also caused by things that people can't control i.e. their skin color or their gender, yet people find reasons to hate people with different skin color or gender. The Giver agrees that sameness is good, after all, it brings balance and it helps to

avoid unnecessary conflict, people are people and they aren't looked at differently for their gender or skin color. Diversity is a good thing to have because it gives people a chance to be different and unique, but by avoiding sameness the community would likely be more chaotic, everyone would have different beliefs, people would attack those with a different opinion, and all of the bad things that come along with diversity i.e. abuse, murders, etc. Sameness also helps the leaders of the Community be more in control i.e. instead of birthdays they have ceremonies where kids are told to adapt to new rules and eventually they get told their future job occupation.

The Giver knows that these rules help everything stay in order and it makes the Community be stable. The Giver has to follow these rules so that the Community does not become unstable and chaotic since he knows how feelings and emotions can cause pain. Emotions being exposed to the Community isn't the only thing that could cause chaos and maybe even destroy the Community, killing people is something that every citizen is unaware of, nobody knows what happens to people when they go to be released, even the people who have to euthanize unhealthy newborns aren't truly aware of what they are doing they have been taught to just do their job. Order is all that the Elders care about in the Community they don't agree that feelings and emotions should be expressed and it should be rather decided who lives with who and who gets to have children, the Giver has always disagreed with their way of thinking but has never been able to do anything about it since he has never had the chance to rebel against the Elders.

The Community has rules and cultures and some of them are acceptable and understandable but most of them are terrible and would cause a lot of controversy or problems if they were to be implemented in our world. Euthanasia or the practice of ending someone's life to ease their suffering, the Community uses euthanasia on very old people and also unhealthy newborn babies. Sameness, everyone sees everything in a black-and-white way and nobody has any strong feelings for anyone i.e. the word “love” has been excluded and should not be said instead they say they like someone, this is a rule about precise language. Their rule about precise language. These three rules above are examples of how bad some of the rules are and how some of their rules are weird but can help the community evolve without causing big problems. The Giver feels very badly about the release since people are led to believe that murdering newborn babies and old people is a normal thing to do.
