Parents physically abuse their kids. It’s a practice that parents have been using for countless centuries now. One of the first was Spartan fathers, who have been reported to have hit their sons with a wooden log if they woke up late or failed to do an activity. Even though this practice of hitting kids with logs faded away, along with the spartan culture. There are still numerous “weapons” that parents use to this date to physically abuse their children, to put them under their discipline. One of the most common weapons is the “deadly wooden spatula” - used for cooking and abusive purposes. Today, in the 21st century, parents hitting their kids is one of the most controversial topics regarding ethics.
Even though it is widely acknowledged around the world that abusing children is unethical. There is still a majority of parents around the world who prefer to smack their kids to keep them disciplined. Around 80% of parents around the world hit their kids, according to the UNICEF Report released in 2014.
The answer is a big no. According to a “high quality” Family study research on 160,000 kids by American psychologists, Elizabeth Gershoff and Andrew Gogan Kaylor in 2016, which found that children who are hit by their parents as a form of discipline “are more likely to defy their parents increased antisocial behavior and mental health problems.” When compared to a child that does not get hit. The research also looked over the future of the children who are hit as kids, which shows that 13 out of 17 adults who were hit as kids either show mental health problems depression, or mainly aggressive behavior. These statistics support that hitting your kids is passed from generation to generation which is true as it has from our early ancestors. It is like a deadly virus one that spread from parent to child for millions of years, and an antidote is yet to be found.
We as a society recognize that it is unethical and illegal for a Husband to hit his Wife. However, we as a society believe that it is ethical for a parent to hit a child b How is that fair? A wife can always leave her husband in case he hits him. Children, however, are still young and are completely dependent on their parents. They cannot just leave they cannot take care of themselves. So what gives parents the right to hit another human just because they are immature?
Even the Holy Bible states “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently(Proverb 23:13).” This means he doesn’t hit his child, does not love his son because he is not disciplining him
