One cannot talk about country music's pioneering style without remembering Dwight Yoakam who is a multi-talented personality. He is an American musician, songwriter, and actor but is also known as a frequent guest on ‘The Tonight Show’. His prowess as a country musician distinguished him as a music legend with so many compilations, numerous albums, and two Grammy Awards. Dwight Yoakam was not bound to music alone, he was also a movie and TV actor who stood out for his many acting roles that began in the year 1991. As is the recent norm with celebrities, Dwight has tried to keep the details of his relationship and personal life away from the media, but this has not stopped tidbits from coming out.
Country music was born on the 23rd of October 1956 in the coal mining area of Pikeville, Kentucky United State, and was named Dwight David Yoakam. He was born into the family of David Yoakam his father who owned a gas station and Ruth Ann Yoakam, his mother who was known as a keypunch operator. His family relocated to Columbus Ohio and that is where he was raised. He has a sister named Kimberly Yoakam and a brother Roland Yoakam both of whom he is older than. In his early years, he attended North High School and finished in the year 1974 but while there, he was known as a very active character in most of the music events and drama the school organized. This is where Dwight Yoakam's passion got fanned to burning flames.
Since then, his love for music and acting grew each day from the basic knowledge he had acquired. He became so acquainted with music and was known to have spent a good time with some local garage bands playing guitar and singing too. In his quest for higher knowledge, immediately after his graduation from High School, he enrolled at Ohio State University and studied History and philosophy. However, his passion for the pursuit of his music career saw him make a major move in 1977. Before the completion of his studies, he moved to Los Angeles and abandoned his school. In Los Angeles, he tried to boost his interest in music and record production.
Dwight Yoakam's music career started in the late 70s when he moved to Nashville with the intention of becoming a recording artist. There, he met Pete Anderson in Nashville who was a guitarist and has the same interest in Music. Of their increasing passion for music, both of them left Nashville and relocated to Los Angeles, and there their audience and fans began to grow and increase. The pair continued to work together and played in nightclubs and so many other places. In 1984, Dwight Yoakam released an independent EP ‘A Town South of Bakersfield’ which got major playtime on the radio in Los Angeles College and alternative radio stations, and before long, he started receiving record contracts. His first albums starting in 1986 are full-length albums like Cadillacs and Guitars which created a lot of buzz for music lovers and were aired on radio stations across America.
He has successfully released studio albums including Hillbilly Deluxe (1987), Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room (1988), If There was a Way (1990), This Time (1993), Gone (1995), A Long Way Home (1998), Tomorrow’s Sounds Today (2000), South of Heaven, West of Hell (2001), Population Me (2003), Blame the Vain (2005), 3 Pears (2012), Second Hand Heart (2015). Dwight Yoakam's cover albums are Under the Covers (1997), In Others Words (2003), Dwight’s Used Records (2004), Dwight Sings Buck (2007), and his Compilation albums include Just Lookin for a Hit (1989), Dwight Live (1995), Last Chance for a Thousand Years (1999) and more that have made him a successful music artiste. As a movie star, Dwight Yoakam has been featured in some interesting movies and comedy films like Sling Blade (1996), Panic Room (2002), Wedding Crashers (2005), Crank (2006), and its sequel in 2009 amongst so many others. Dwight's performances as a country musician and a movie star have also seen him acquire many recognitions and be nominated severally for Awards. He won an award in 1986 for Top New Male Vocalist in the Academy of Country Music Awards, Artist of the Year, in 1993 CMT Europe Award,
Best Country Vocal Performance, Male, in the 1994 Grammy Award, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in the 1999 Grammy Awards, International Touring Artist at the 2007 Country Music Association Award, Cliffe Stone Pioneer Award at the 2011 Academy of Country Music Award, and more.
