The two music style I have chosen is Western classical music, Symphony #40, and South African jazz, The Wedding. Western classical music is mostly from Europ countries, and they have more instruments used than other music styles. South African jazz has a modern music style and uses less traditional instruments than western classical music, it uses instruments such as bass and saxophone, these instruments are not often appearing in classical pieces. I choose these music styles to compare because I am familiar with western classical music and I want to know more about South African Jazz.
“Symphony No. 40” was created by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart created “Symphony #40” in 1788 and was first published it in 1794. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a famous composer and musician in the 18th century. He showed musical talent from childhood. He created more than 600 music works.

“The Wedding ” was composed by Abdullah Ibrahim. The author Abdullah Ibrahim is a South African musician and composer. His music was affected by his childhood in Cape Town, and his music style is often different. Ibrahim created “The Wedding” in 1980.
There are 10 pioneers of western classical music started in the baroque era, they are Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, George Frideric Handel, Henry Purcell, Claudio Monteverdi, Heinrich Schutz, Domenico Scarlatti, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Arcangelo Corelli, and Georg Philipp Telemann.
Symphony #40 is played for entertainment, usually, play in concerts and competitions. “The wedding” is played in the entertainment context because religion and ceremonies do not use jazz music. The music’s name is “the wedding”, but people rarely use jazz music at a wedding. “The Wedding “ is a jazz style. The song is not in a loud voice and makes people feel comfortable.
The instrument used in Mozart’s “Symphony #40”: (Orchestra) flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, and strings. The instrument used in “The Wedding” includes saxophone and bass, I can only tell these because this piece is not famous and there is not so much information online as Symphony #40 has.
The elements of Symphony #40 contains:
Pitch: The flute, horns, and violin are always high, and other instruments are all accompanied.
Rhythm: It is Molto Allegro, and it is faster than a normal allegro. The part we listen to is 2/2 rhythm in G minor.
Timbre: Violin and flute are sharp and loud, other string instruments are lower than the main melody instruments and
Texture: The music is homophonic because there is only one melody and the other sounds’ purposes are to fill in the melody, they are not the real melodies.
Dynamics: The loudness of the song can let people connect it to different scenes that happened, and it has great differences between the loudest part and the quietest part of the song if compared together.
The elements of “The Wedding” contains:
Pitch: Saxophone has a high pitch and the bass is low.
Rhythm: 2/2 or 4/4
Timbre: Saxophone sounds sharp and it forms the main melody, the bass is low and forms the accompaniment.
Texture: The music is homophonic, there are only 2-3 types of sound appearing and there is only one melody, other sounds are composed to coordinate the melody.
Dynamics: The dynamic is not obvious, the saxophone is always loud and the bass is always low.
Compared to western classical music, South African music would let people feel easy and relax more because South African jazz doesn’t completely follow the classical rhythm, and western classical music is more professional than people rarely plays it for entertainment such as playing it in a store or a street because it is not similar with modern aesthetic conceptions. Playing western classical music is not as easy as South African jazz music, because western classical needs more people to perform and may need more time to create the piece. South African jazz has less change in dynamic than western classical music, in the piece, there is only dynamic change when the music started and ended. Because of the dynamic, South African jazz can let people feel relaxed, and western classical music has a big change in dynamics and may make people feel excited. Western Classical music has more instruments used compared to South African music. This piece, (Symphony #40) includes an orchestra.
