The 'Truth or Dare' game society

When observing the behavior of Brazilians in the last three years, we can point out some relevant and interrelated issues that have re-established the way of life of this population, such as increasing time spent on the Internet, production of hate speech, and the spread of Fake News. The connection between these three items quoted is an enormous phenomenon that affects not only Brazilians’ interpersonal relations but also influenced the presidential elections in the country last year.

In the last 10 years, it has been possible to see a huge increase in the use of mobile phones in the world and, consequently, the time of use on the internet. If we give it some thought, some years ago our family members would say not to believe everything they saw or read on the internet, but the recent speech has been 'I saw it on the internet, so it's true.' In this context of the internet usage period, Brazil is in second place worldwide; not only for the ease of solving daily tasks by mobile devices, but also, for moments of distraction and pleasure online. It is also worth mentioning that Brazilians have also become addicted to staying connected 24/7. Always posting photos, knowing the news live, and spending hours sliding through the timeline of applications are plausible and indispensable points in this discussion. It is de digital culture. Many Brazilians have chosen not to have cable TV in their homes, thanks to streaming sites; the production and consumption of the physical newspaper has declined drastically, precisely because it is much more convenient to read all the news in one place than to load pages and pages of a printed newspaper. It is also worth mentioning that the diversity of plans presented by the telephone companies contributes to keeping the user always connected and making him aware of everything on time.

Also, in the last decade, it is possible to see that the debates about minority groups such as feminists, the LGBTQ + community, blacks, and religious groups have intensified in order not only to guarantee and preserve their rights but also to combat prejudices and to break customary taboos of Society. However, it is observed that the number of people who do not accept these groups also appears bigger and stronger. It looks like that when there was not so much talk about diversity, rancor, and repression were not propagated to this extent. It has recently been observed that Brazilians have shown to be more intolerant and conservative than we thought, and this behavior is legitimized when political representatives speak out against minorities and use hate speeches against these groups.

The third point discussed here is the huge production and sharing of fake News in Brazil. In 2017 and 2018 it was observed that the number of false news shared mainly on WhatsApp and Facebook was numerous. Most people today read the headline and share it without at least confirming the content of the news or whether that information is true. The fake news explosion hit not only many everyday issues but topics that involved politics and campaigning as well. Even after there was proof that many of these stories were false, based on official documents, people did not give in and still believed the false news.

In making a connection between the three issues addressed, a cycle is built in an almost vicious way in the current Brazilian society. It is worth mentioning that it is more than absolute truth that the internet brings everything and everyone together, that the ease of obtaining and creating information (true or false) with only a touch, expands the world of information exchange to unimaginable levels. However, Brazilians are demonstrating an increase in individualism, resistance, and hate for everything involving minorities. It has been noted that people are increasingly intolerant, revealing their prejudices and believing only in what suits them. Many want a political representative to tell them what is comfortable to hear and not necessarily what the country needs. To those who are against these ideals, criticism is heavy, for the absolute truth for many is shared by instant chat applications and social networks. The population no longer hears anyone who thinks differently, responding with offenses, arguing, and breaking ties. In addition, the freedom that the Internet provides, makes people feel more comfortable in offending or assaulting someone and some social group. It can also be said that the difficulty that exists in the judicial system regarding reports of virtual crimes is a factor that feeds this aggression freedom. On the other hand, the number of people who try daily to overcome intolerance, prejudice, and radicalism in the country is great. Not only young people but also the most varied age groups are constantly trying to recover the true values within Brazilian society, including mutual respect among those who see it differently.

It is believed that these issues are present not only in Brazil. We see daily news about intolerance throughout the world, but the consequences of this have generated scenarios that were never thought possible before, and many say that Brazil is not in the XXI century, but XVII or XVIII, due to all these feelings of rancor and intolerance propagated in the current society. Regaining compassion among Brazilians will not be easy, neither will opening the minds of intolerant people to healthy dialogue, but it is believed to be the biggest social goal at the moment. We are all living in a society that does not seek equality among all, but a society that always tries to overlap the other, increasingly competitive, individualistic, prejudiced, and conservative to the point of believing in everything seen and listened to in the media and which neglects the fact that anyone deserves to have their rights assured. We look forward to a society that not only reads a headline, but questions the content, analyzes other sources, and debates the subject healthily and profitably. And of course, remember that,t above any political, religious, or social position, what is greater than all, is respect for all.
