Brave New World was written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley an English writer and philosopher. A world that’s under control by the Government, where citizens lost their freedom, however, were granted pleasures instead. They cannot know the truth as they were brought up not knowing and still they don’t want to know the truth anyway. The truth and their happiness are incompatible within Brave New World. The author uses characterization, symbolism, and motif throughout the novel to support his views that to have a picture-perfect life you cannot know the truth.

Characterization is one of the three techniques that Huxley uses to support his view. Characterization is the construction of a fictional character. It gives the readers a strong sense of the character's personalities and difficulties. By doing this, it makes the characters believable. The characters explore the concept that happiness and truth are incompatible within this society. Many of the characters show this, however, the main two would be Lenina who is content but is ignorant to several truths that surround her in the world and is resistant to understanding, and John who has freedom, although becomes more depressed as the novel continues. John and Lenina love one another very much, however, they are two different people. John is a monogamy which is when an individual has one partner during their lifetime and Lenina does not. John is appalled by the way Lenina’s lifestyle uses soma and sexual activity daily. John describes Lenina’s lifestyle as “It was ignoble” (Huxley, 1931, pg.105). Lenina wants to have sex with John straight but John believes you have to wait.

Symbolism is a technique is using an object or word that is different from its literal idea. A type of symbolism that is used within the book is soma which explores the concept that happiness and truth are incompatible within this dystopian society. Soma is a type of drug that cures any type of unhappiness. It keeps the citizens away from depression and the real truth that lies beneath them. An example of a character within the book that uses the drug for what it is intended for is Lenina, while John rejects it completely, and Linda uses it so much to the point where it leads her to death. A conversation between John and Mustapha in chapter eleven is “And if ever, by some unlucky chance, anything unpleasant should somehow happen, why, there’s always soma to give you a holiday from the facts. And there’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering. In the past, you could only accomplish these things by making a great effort and after years of hard moral training. Now, you swallow two or three half-gramme tablets, and there you are. Anybody can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your morality about in a bottle. Christianity without tears- that’s what soma is (Huxley, 1931, pg.210). Soma offers a way to deal with unpleasant emotions that lead to incompetence and disputes.
