Gender inequality has been a major canker that the world is dealing with. It has especially been a major subject for most women all over the world fighting for balance in gender. This gender issue has also caught the attention of many organizations, advocates, and as well as activists to call for gender equality and equal rights for all to have access to resources, opportunities, and other benefits of society. In our traditional society for example it is believed that a girlwoman's place is in the kitchen whilst a manboy attends school to acquire all the necessary knowledge to attain higher positions in society. However, there is evidence that our societies are not developing at an impressive pace since the group at a disadvantage is large and can contribute greatly to the development of our society. Kofi Annan once said - Gender equality is more than a goal in itself it is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development, and building good governance.' This is how important gender equality can be to the progression of our society. One may still be in doubt about how important it is to achieve gender equality, especially in our contemporary African societies. To clarify more, I would like to take the rest of the space to write up on the importance of achieving gender equality in our contemporary African society.

To begin with, gender equality is important in our contemporary African society because it prevents violence and saves lives. Gender inequality has resulted in many violence and has cost many lives as well. Most of the domestic violence in our society is rooted in gender inequality. For example, most women are subjected to harsh treatment by their husbands as a result of gender imbalance. To support this, according to the statistics available at the Accra Regional Office of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), as of August 2020, 31.9% of Ghanaian women have faced at least one form of physical, psychological, economic, social or sexual and this can be said to be as a result of sexism in the country. Most of these brutalities that women are subjected to in their homes equally lead to loss of lives. For example, there was a situation in the Volta Region where a man killed his wife just because the wife refused the man sexual pleasure due to tiredness from her daily activities. This is the extent to which gender inequality has caused damage to our society. For society to be safe and sound for all, equal right has to be given to all. Gender rights should be a necessity, not a privilege to promote peace in our society.

Secondly, another importance of achieving gender equality is to attract talent to develop business organizations. Gender equality plays a vital role in the development of business organizations in our contemporary African society. Business organizations that do not display gender discrimination tend to develop since there will be free exercising of talents among everybody to enhance performance at work. When equal right is given to menboys and womengirls at workplaces they all tend to work hand in hand to develop organizations as well as the society at large. Gender equality ensures that girls especially become better business leaders in the future since they will also have equal access to education and training required for jobs Indra Nooyi, the chairman and CEO of Pepsi Co. said - we need the talent and insights of girls today to lead our businesses tomorrow. That's why expanding educational opportunities for girls isn't charity. It's a smart investment in a stronger global economy and our future.' This to a great extent can not be denied since achieving gender equality in our contemporary African society will guarantee girls the same rights as boys hence, the future progression of businesses and African society in the long run.

Again, it is important to achieve gender equality in contemporary African society because it increases productivity and reduces poverty. In the discussions of poverty alleviation and increasing productivity plans, achieving gender equality can not be overemphasized. This is because achieving gender equality will ensure that people irrespective of their gender work effectively to increase productivity and attain all the necessities of life required to build a better standard of living hence reducing poverty. Gender inequality in our contemporary African society has denied most women the chance of working to acquire wealth and therefore, makes them dependent on men who are the only working force hence increasing the poverty rate. In traditional Ghanaian Society, for instance, it is taboo for a woman to own land to talk of tilling it. As a result, they solely depend on their husbands for their needs. Therefore, achieving gender equality will ensure that disadvantaged groups will equally get access to resources and opportunities needed to achieve a good standard of living leading to poverty alleviation and boosting productivity.

Finally, achieving gender equality in contemporary African society is vital.
