The Oration of Memory by Fedrick Douglass was a remembrance of the former president Lincoln, he wanted to tell his story and wanted people, especially African Americans to know what he did through his years of presidency. During the speech, Douglass needed to make decisions, decisions on how he will honor and address Lincoln's memory, he wanted to pinpoint the areas in Lincoln's life that affected people in a good way and that coincided with the freedom of slaves. Above all, Douglass decided to focus on Lincoln’s service to the country and his fight to end slavery in the United States. Douglass also mentions that Lincoln gave slaves a sense of ease and hope as he assured them that the change that they were looking for was going to come some way somehow and he was right, President Lincoln managed to impact not only the United States but the world through his decisions and opinions he held onto; he changed the future for the better and made way for a new era and gave birth to new possibilities and opportunities for black youth to flourish and become one and whole. Above all, it made way for blacks to have education alongside position and authority which Lincoln made sure to be adopted by everyone, in a sense he wanted everything to be inclusive but Lincoln took care of his country and he changed it for equality and peace could shed through.

Furthermore, at the beginning of Douglass's speech, he doesn’t refer to President Lincoln as President, he refers to him more as an object, another person who he doesn’t seem to talk about thoroughly yet; but, it wasn’t until later in his speech that he acknowledges him as a “white man” who was perfect but also imperfect as he states “Abraham Lincoln was not, in the fullest sense of the word, either out mam or out model” but rather was “a

A white man who was president to the white people who was entirely devoted to them.” The whole speech gives gratitude and celebration within Lincoln but it also sheds light on his not-so-good side for black citizens. Douglass begins to connect with his audience when it comes to all the problems, sacrifices, and determination when he goes on to state how life was before Lincoln allowed change to come, that everything has been reconstructed alongside Lincoln's legacy.
