On that fateful day, it happened. I lost a part of me. It was evening. It was near dusk. Stepping onto the golden white sand of the beach that stretched as far as the eye could see, I felt like I had just stepped on a cloud. The soft sand tickled my tall and slender toes, which were time-worn from years of hardship, causing me to curl my toes. A minefield of corals, the sand encompassed a set of various multi-colored seashells.
Strands of hair caressed my face as a gentle wind ruffled my hair like a jovial and loving parent. The pulsing heart of the sea caused a gentle swell, as the waves crashed onto the shore, washing the evening’s debris onto it. Casting my eyes out to sea I saw the yachts rocking mesmerizingly in a cradle-like fashion and the waves were like creases on a humongous bale of taffeta. My nose tingled as I breathed in the smell of the salty sea. I gazed at the great and bright ball of fire as it faded like a yellow lollipop on the bright horizon. I was transfixed by its beauty. Birds chirruped and chirped as they roamed around the sky with the grace of a swan and the speed of a bullet. Adding the finishing touch to the scenery, the sounds of the beach created a sense of peace and harmony within me.
Exotic palm trees were lined in close-set rows and dipped their heads in time to the waves. Their beauty was incomparable. Looking around and admiring the sublimity of the beach I knew that the same picturesque sea before me had been a salty coffin for many an unsuspecting beachgoer. The sea was not to be underestimated as it held many dark secrets underneath its surface.
Sighing, I turned around on my heel and began heading away from the seashore. As I was doing so it happened. The rain started shooting down like arrows trying to pierce my skin and rumbling thunder roared overhead like a caged animal just waiting to unleash its wrath. Without warning a herculean sized came over me and dragged me into the murky depths of the river. Time passed. I don’t know how long. One thing I knew for certain, I didn’t have a lot of time left. The water quickly seeped past my nails and into my knuckles, my palms. As I went deeper and deeper, the light from above quickly started to shrink, resembling my hope.
Darkness. I gasped. Poor decision. My throat was immediately overwhelmed by a stream of algae and water. My body contorted in pain, and feeling my mobile phone gets soaked, I realized that it was not only communication I lost but I was losing the battle for my life. As I looked beneath me I saw piles upon piles of skulls and that granted me a new surge of strength.
I paddled frenziedly in a final and desperate attempt to survive. A sudden and constant pounding ricocheted around my skull. As I swam upwards to the surface, hands reached out to me and I swim towards them. With the most focused of hands, I tried to latch onto my savior’s hands. Yet, my fingers didn’t move. My body had failed me.
