Objectives:

To determine the prevalence, associated factors and patterns of CAM use among Diabetic patients type 2 aged older than 18 years attending clinic at health facilities in Dodoma urban.

Methods:

The study will be based on randomized selection cross sectional study, conducted at health facilities in Dodoma urban district among DM patients type 2 attending clinic by direct interviewing and asking questions in Swahili language by utilizing questionnaire and the collected data will be examined by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

The recent percentage prevalence review of CAM use, which consist a total of 18 studies from 9 different countries, showed that the burden of CAM use among diabetic mellitus patients ranges from 17% to 73%.

A study which was done in Lebanon showed that folk foods and herbs medicines were the most commonly used CAM followed by natural healthy products, spiritual healing, relaxation techniques and vitamins, this could be due to the presence of floral diversity that for long has constituted a basis for health care.

The use of CAM is a public health concern with recent review of CAM use, which consist a total of 18 studies from 9 different countries, showed that the burden of CAM use among diabetic mellitus patients ranges from 17% to 73%. Despite advances in care and management of diabetes mellitus still there is an increase in morbidity, mortality and long term complications, this could be due to the use of CAM which could interact with convectional medications and lead to failure in regulating glucose.
