The British created new technology and systems. Using imperialism, they were able to spread their technology and gain new ideas from other countries. As the Industrial Revolution started in Britain, imperialism allowed the principles of the Industrial Revolution to spread to the developing world. It has helped nations modernize their economies, grow new crops, and build new infrastructures. Over time, this process of development tends to create safer societies because it allows people from different cultures and ethnicities to communicate more openly, ultimately allowing imperialism to have a positive impact on the world. The picture in source A, an American cartoon painted in 1899 entitled ‘The White Man’s Burden (Apologies to Rudyard Kipling), displays the white men carrying the ancient, primitive, medieval, and uncivilized people up a mountain to an advanced, civilized as well as developed society we live in today. It shows the white men carrying the uncivilized groups slowly up a mountain through the steps of barbarism, oppression, ignorance, superstition, vice, brutality, slavery, cannibalism, and cruelty, all the way up to civilization, which is where the British finally took the people due to imperialism. This metaphorical painting suggests that new technologies, medicine, agriculture, knowledge, and education have been spread around the world through imperialism. New theories of maths and science have been provided from around the globe, these new educational concepts were able to be spread to every modern school due to imperialism. Modern healthcare access, through imperialism, has provided vaccines, medication, and modern knowledge to the developing world and this has saved countless lives. Imperialism had a positive effect on the world, as the civilized world we have today would not be possible. Most of the world would still be living in primitive times, and technology would not be able to advance or evolve. Overall, the source A painting proves the idea that imperialism had a positive effect on the world, as it allowed the Industrial Revolution that started in Britain to be spread throughout many other countries carrying them from a primitive and medieval type of society to an advanced and civilized world.

Under British rule, people were put into slavery, killed, raped, and tortured, with methods of castration, mutilation, and beatings. British imperialism caused many deaths along with many ruined lives, ultimately allowing imperialism to hurt the world. The evidence of source B suggests that in 1950 the people of Kenya were majorly affected by the imperial rule of Britain. Concentration camps were created with tens of thousands of Africans being murdered with even more suffering victims. In 2013 the British government finally agreed to pay compensation to the Mau Mau Veterans’ Association for torture during the 1950s uprising in Kenya. The evidence from source B proves that British imperialism has led to thousands of deaths and encouraged slavery. Expansion by strong nations almost always creates slavery of some type. In past centuries, it encouraged the outright ownership of others, often against their will. Many Kenyans who survived the brutal British rule have spoken of the terrible and traumatizing acts performed.
