Pop culture should be studied because it will rejuvenate old culture, keep society up to date, and, overall help individuals find solutions to their daily conflicts. Pop culture has many benefits and should be studied as it can help society and individuals stay educated.
Popular culture has been a long-existing concept as old pop culture is now recently brought into new pop culture. It characterizes modern society as a consumer society, in which even such timeless things as art and literature are built on a commercial basis (Adams 1). Overall stating how pop culture does not create anything new as it simply modernizes old culture for newer mass consumption. For example, the Mona Lisa was created approximately 513 years ago and only appealed to artists and art enthusiasts. Recently memes and other cyberculture forms have been created bringing a substantial amount of attention to this timeless art piece. Studying pop culture, will bring awareness to older important pieces and also interest recent consumers of modern pop culture.
Pop culture is more well-known than it is given credit for as it comes in numerous forms including magazines, music, social media, and, much more. With all of these different forms, social media is a great platform to show awareness and get a message across globally. For example, on May 22, 2017, the Manchester Arena was bombed as fans were leaving Ariana Grande‘s concert (Shapiro 1). Soon after the bombing, fans of Ariana and Ariana herself, took this issue to social media to show awareness of this bombing. Ariana Grande and many fellow pop artists also set up a tribute concert to raise money for the victim's families. Therefore, pop culture should be studied because it is a fast and appropriate way of sending a message globally. It is a great way for people to stay up to date on occurring events around the world and can help where help is needed.
Pop culture and reality TV go together well, as reality TV is always keeping up with pop culture norms. For example, the TV series Keeping Up With The Kardashians takes you inside the life of five wealthy sisters running all of their businesses and facing challenges together as a team. As these sisters face many obstacles in their life these obstacles are also things that the viewers could potentially be going through in their own life. It may also relieve stress as viewers think “they have so much going on that [they] think, ‘Wow, my life is so simple and easy,'” (Roman 1), hopefully giving the audience a way to compare and contrast related issues. Therefore, pop culture should be studied because as reality TV is keeping up with pop culture so should society, as both can run into related problems and could give possible solutions.
