Nowadays, a lot of young adults are utilizing social media such as Facebook, Snapchat, Tumblr, Instagram, and many more.

Social media is one of the reasons for many of the world’s problems and solutions. In this essay, I will be exploring the positive and negative effects of social media on young adults.

By definition, social media means websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Many social media users are addicted and have become more isolated the more they use it. The average teenager spends about nine hours online rather than outside having fun.

Social media plays an important role in every student's life. It is easier and more convenient to access information, provide information and communicate. It can work as a great tool to help students study. If you need help with a difficult question you can look up something to help you or you could message a friend to help u work out the answer. Students are using their social media platforms to share opinions and views. They are also mastering web design and video processing to share information on their studies. Another great feature of social media is an opportunity to learn about education. Many students desire to study abroad and look for opportunities to fulfill their dreams social media can help them do that.

A negative effect of Social media is that teenagers are exposed to cyberbullying. Social media gives bullies an online platform to taunt and make fun of others. More than 1 in 3 young adults have experienced cyber threats online. Cyberbullying is most likely to affect any child between the ages of 10 to 19. Instant messaging apps like Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and many more are good for posting images like memories and yes it is easy to block people from seeing your posts but as easy as that is it's just as easy to comment on something abusive or something disrespectful on someone’s pictures. As a result of cyberbullying many children are finding the only way to get through it is to harm themselves. According to BBC News, there has been a “68% rise in self-harm among girls aged 13-16 since 2011”. Most of this is due to unpleasant and upsetting comments.

There are many job adverts posted online with the use of social media. Whether they are volunteer positions, full-time or part-time they can all be found on social media platforms. For example, LinkedIn has over 530 million current users and is one of the most used apps that can help you find a job. LinkedIn can be a valuable tool in your job search as businesses and recruiters will use the social media platform to search for candidates for particular jobs and then approach them directly.

Another example is Facebook. Many employers will place job advertisements on this social media app. You can find these opportunities by searching for “Jobs on Facebook” in the search bar on the site.

Social media can be a distraction. As social media is becoming more popular, students all over the world in various years are spending more and more time online. Nowadays schools have been creating strict rules about phone use in classrooms because of the temptation to go online. Schools have to take measures like blocking the applications because students are messing around on their phones rather than paying attention.

Law enforcement uses social media to catch and prosecute criminals. 73% of federal, state, and local law enforcement professionals surveyed think 'social media helps solve crimes more quickly.' Not only can police use social media to solve crimes, but they can also use it to help find missing, endangered, or distressed people. The things people post online can be very helpful. Police can read between the lines of the suspect’s posts and get insight into their mentality or potential motives.

The world is full of people who believe they are better than everyone with their perfect, skin, body, and hair. Thanks to Photoshop young adults who believe they don’t fit in because they don’t look like the models they see on Instagram finally have a platform that allows them to change the way they look for example it allows them to make them look skinner or there bum bigger or their hair darker/lighter. Many teens go through a rough patch in their lives when they don’t believe that they are perfect the way they are or doubt themselves so much that they allow the worst part of themselves to take over and they try to change the way they look.

In conclusion, although using social media has many positive impacts on our lives it also has many negative impacts on our lives. Despite rapid sources of information, easy job searches, and help in law enforcement. Social media also enables people to get distracted, cyber bully and change the way they look. Social media stands somewhere between good and bad.
