For this reflection post, I was asked to read an article by Slade titled “What are the odds? To learn to think critically, Take a Statistics class” by Laura Miller and provide feedback on a few questions. After reading this article, I would say that agree with the author that it would be beneficial to take a statistics class in school. One of the main points I agree with is that a lot of things in everyday life come in the form of numbers. Some examples of this include weather forecasting, “What is the best-selling toy?”, and “Who’s voting for who in the election?” all of which use statistical data to help inform us about certain things. Another one of the main points I agree with is when she expressed how important it was to learn what certain terms mean like statistically significant and regression to the mean. When something is statistically significant then that tells us about our outcome between two or more variables which was caused by something besides chance.

In other words, this helps us figure out if our data is useful. Regression to the mean tells us that if a sample is extreme, then the next sample will most likely be closer to the mean. I think that taking this statistics class has helped me develop my critical thinking skills. One thing that I learned that has helped me develop my critical thinking skills was learning how to connect statistics to things that happen in real life. For example, statistics are used in showcasing important things like how available the coronavirus vaccine is, what products are available in the store, and which are not, how well students did on the SATACT, and how sales are doing right now what they project to be in the future for a business. Another thing I learned that has helped develop my critical thinking skills was learning statical concepts like hypothesis testing, bias, probability, etc.

Hypothesis testing is when you or a group of people test a hypothesis regarding a population parameter using sample data. Bias is when a statistic or statistics overestimate or underestimate a parameter. Probability is the likelihood an event is to occur in a given scenario. The last thing I learned that has helped develop my critical thinking skills was learning what the elements of a statistical experiment were and how to communicate what the conclusions were. I feel that this class prepared me to be more aware of the data around me by giving me the ability to be statistically literate.

Being statistically literate helps me understand, analyze, and communicate statistics better than I have before. Yes, this course has helped me to be a better decision-maker in the future for a few reasons. The first reason is that to be careful not to be persuaded by misleading charts. I have realized throughout this class that these charts are more prevalent than I have previously thought. The second reason is that to be careful of outside factors during an experiment. These factors are also known as confounding variables, and they are factors that change the results of a given experiment. The last reason is that by using probability I can make better decisions. For example, if I wanted to go to a certain graduate school or university, I could calculate the probability of my chances of getting in.
