Foreign policy refers to all the steps taken by the government to deal with other countries. All the matters of trade of defense are included in it. Pakistan’s foreign policy objectives are made under the influence of Quaid’s vision which was presented before us years ago.
The great leader Quaid-e-Azam explained completely the basic tenets of Pakistan’s foreign policy at a press conference in Delhi on 14 July 1947. He was of the view that the new state will be friendly with all other nations. Pakistan will always play the maximum role possible to maintain peace in the world and will never build aggressive relations with any country. Some of his key tenets include
The following points clearly explain that Quaid was a man of morals and values who always wanted to have good relations not only with neighboring countries but with all the countries of the world. Quaid’s vision of foreign policy satisfies the charter of UNO. It believes in territorial integrity, non-interference in each other affairs, and settlement of all disputes by intellectual negotiations. He knew that the geographical location of Pakistan is really important so while taking political decisions, geography must be considered.
Pakistan’s foreign policy thus has always been determined primarily by its geo-political environment. Quaid always placed the security of the state at the top of his priority list. He wanted to improve the relations with India as Pakistan faced severe enmity from this neighbor of hers since independence. Quaid stressed on unity of Muslim countries and he always made sure that Pakistan supported Muslim countries in any crises they face.
This is the reason why his vision has always been considered important in the history of taking decisions regarding the foreign policy of Pakistan. Pakistan has always stood by Muslim countries and there are many examples in history when Pakistan has been proven as a peaceful state. When Israel attacked Jordan, Pakistan sent her army to fight against Israel and these were only Pakistani pilots who were able to destroy two planes of Israel. Pakistan has always supported Muslim countries and has taken really wise decisions and it all became possible just under the influence of the vision of Quaid that how foreign policy should be made. Pakistan has gained a great reputation in the world due to its foreign policy. The President of Turkey says that Pakistan feels like a second home and according to the President of Indonesia Pakistan is the heart of the Muslim world.
In current foreign policy, Pakistan focuses on inter-state relations whereas, for a domestically unstable country such as Pakistan, our main focus must be on external relations.
All our difficulties are the result of the failure of our governance. Without good governance, good foreign policy can never establish. Even a superpower like the Soviet Union could not survive because it was not strong from political and economic points of view.
Pakistan has faced many challenges throughout history which brought difficulties in establishing a fine foreign policy or implementing the policy already made. India has been one of the major causes of many challenges faced by Pakistan. Moreover, India’s unprecedented influence in Afghanistan also has effects on Pakistan but still, Pakistan has successfully tried to be steady and strong. This became possible by preferring peace in all chaotic situations.
In the contemporary world, Pakistan still has a firm belief in establishing peaceful relations with all other states. So it is clear that Pakistan never forgot its foreign policy which was the dream of its founder. According to the vision of our great leader, we must keep the attitude of kindness towards friends and courtesy towards enemies keeping in mind Iqbal’s message of self-respect, esteem, and dignity.
