Most scientists claim that the reason the earth’s climate is changing is due to the increase of greenhouse gases, most notably carbon dioxide. Carbon Dioxide is said to be predominantly emitted by human activities, thus creating the scientific theory that global warming is caused by none other than humans. However, not everyone concurs with this theory. Some, very few, are rather skeptic and critique this popular belief on the account that there is some deeper non-environmental motive behind it. This skeptic perspective is expressed in the documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle. Directed by Martin Dunkin The Great Global Warming swindle features various scientists, politicians, and writers such as: Tim Ball, Nir Shaviv, Nigel Lawson, Ian Clark, John Christy, Phillip Stott, Paul Reifer, Piers Corbyn, Roy Spencer, Patrick Michaels, Nigel Calder, Syun-Ichi Akasofu, Frederick Singer, Carl Wunsch, and Eigil Fris-Christensen, Richard, Lindzen, and Patrick Moore that do not agree with the popular notion of anthropogenic global warming. The speakers in this documentary take a different approach concerning the cause of global warning: conveying that it is not anthropogenic activities that are causing global warming, rather solar activity. So then why do the majority of scientists without hesitation state that humans are the concluding cause and not consider other probabilities? According to the documentary, the topic of global warming has become everything but an environmental issue; instead, it has become a political, social, and media issue. Also, it has become a matter of what most popular accepted belief will result in the most funding for research. Thus, all speakers argue that the co-existing theory of man-made global warming has been exploited and influenced by various factors that favor the politically correct consensus. While this argument might be considered invalid by some, it is evident that there is some truth to it.

Today the media portrays the topic of manmade global warming as an undisputed fact that is going to have apocalyptic consequences if carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to increase. As a result, a lot of individuals are under the false impression that if no changes are made soon, the earth is going to vanish in the next 12-20 years. But is that really true? A similar message was communicated back in the mid-1970s when the issue of global warming was a problem of rather global cooling. Many reporters and journalists dictated that global cooling was going to have disastrous outcomes and another ice age would occur that would destroy the nation. However, as time went on, that belief proved to be wrong because the temperature actually started increasing, thus resulting in warmer weather and no ice age. So then why have so many exaggerated the issue? In a generation where new types of reporters and environmental journalists exist, ' if the global warming story goes in the trashcan so does your job,' says Science writer Niger Calder. Similarly, Biogeography Professor Phillip Stott states,” if the whole global warming farrago collapsed there would be an awful lot of people out of jobs”. The media does not care if the evidence supporting the theory of manmade global warming is actually accurate, rather what's most significant is whether that story will grab the most public attention and protect jobs.

If environmental journalists and reporters are overstressing the matter to keep their jobs and gain support, what’s to say that the scientist researching the topic aren’t under the same circumstance; influencing and tampering evidence for their own agendas. Throughout the documentary, the speakers emphasize the lack of evidence and the lack of factual evidence supporting the theory of anthropogenic global warming, stating that scientists merely support this theory to receive government funding.
