Communication is the process of exchanging information, thoughts, feelings, ideas, and emotions through writing, signal speech, and behavior. Communication does not only occur in humans but also in lower organisms, it is actually a key instrument for the survival of lower organisms, more human beings with larger requirements. Communication is therefore essential in human lives. There is much importance in communication, some of which will be explained in detail in the ensuing paragraphs.
Firstly, proper communication enhances productivity. Productivity is simply a measure of an individual's efficiency. In the workplace, for instance, communication between a manager and an employee plays a key role in business success. When employees receive unclear directives from their managers due to poor communication, the time taken to complete a task increases and productivity decreases. Also, when there is proper communication between employers and employees, employers gain the trust of employees, increasing their morale and making them work more efficiently, leading to increased productivity.
Secondly, communication brings about development. Communication plays a key role in the development of human societies because development cannot effectively take place just through one person but rather through a group of people with a common goal who effectively communicate and exchange ideas. For instance, if there is a problem in a certain area, communication between those facing the problem and those who can do something about it will be the first step to development. Also, in finding solutions to these problems, another step in development will be the exchange of ideas which can solve the problem through communication between individuals. This holds in local, national, and even global development.
Thirdly, communication brings about and enhances relationships. Communication is very important for building relationships and enhancing them. Consider a situation where a person isolates him- or herself from the company of others, the chances that he or she will build relationships with others are very low. And suppose the individual is able to build relationships with others, those relationships would come falling apart due to poor communication. Effective communication between children and their parents enhances their relationship and builds trust between them, which is good for children's development. Having good relations is very important in human life because there are many obstacles in life that might need the help of others to overcome and these relationships require communication to be built and sustained.
And finally, communication saves lives. Communication has saved and continues to save a lot of human lives. For instance, in the case of COVID-19, through effective communication, the causes and preventive measures of this pandemic were spread across the country, keeping people informed and preventing them from doing things that would have put them at risk of contracting the coronavirus. Apart from the coronavirus, the prevention of many other diseases has been made possible through public education, which also involves communication. In healthcare settings, patients must be able to communicate their problems with their doctors, nurses, or pharmacists so that they can receive effective care. This helps save a lot of lives.
To sum up, communication is very essential in human lives and cannot be done away with. Some of the importance of communication in man's life has been explained above.
