Society has faced many tribulations and injustices, but it only takes one person to see these inequalities to bring about change. In our society (Australia) what brings about change is social justice. Social justice is the equal distribution of opportunity among the people and disparaging prejudice and discrimination towards a person or a group of people. These types of attitudes have been expressed all over the world calling out injustice. Gandhi used his philosophy to combat the British imperialists and spread the ideas of social justice. By analyzing who Gandhi was, what Christian values related to Gandhi’s campaign, what secular values also aligned with Gandhi, and analyzing what changes came about after Gandhi we will see how Gandhi spread social justice.

Mahatma Gandhi (or Gandhi) was born in India and spent most of his life in India until he went to Britain to study law and went to Africa to protest the injustices he saw there. He soon went back to India to help the INC (Indian National Congress) and Indians Protest against the East India Company (Britain) (Encyclopædia Britannic, 2019). The social justice issues he encountered when in Britain were the British excising on goods such as salt committing massacres across India and also implementing rules that interfered with the Hindu and the Muslim way of life. Gandhi actively stood opposed to the tyranny that befell his country (Indian Government, 2000).

Gandhi’s acts against tyranny are in line with Catholic values. The Catholic social teachings all preach loving and accepting your neighbor and taking care of the environment. Two CST relate to Gandhi's solidarity and life and dignity for the human person (Catholic Bishops, 2005). These CST align with Gandhi's views because Gandhi believed in helping everyone not just the Hindus but also all Indians whether you were Muslim or a Shik when trying to get rid of the ‘Honourable East India’ and he thought standing together was more effective than standing divided. Gandhi’s values also align with encyclicals, specifically Quadragesimo Anno: On the Reconstruction of the Social Order (As, 2013). Gandhi’s values align with the encyclical because the British instituted their social order and destroyed the Indian social system in which the British put in place themselves and their Western values on top. Gandhi stood opposed to these forced values and peacefully protested against them. Gandhi used his philosophy to stand against the evil that was in his country which we can also relate to Christianity.

Gandhi’s morals and ethics can be connected with two other ideologies. Gandhi’s morals and actions can be connected with utilitarianism and Kantian theory. Utilitarianism is the belief that an action is good if it benefits the majority of the population (Julia Driver,2014). Gandhi tried to get rid of the British because it would help the majority of the population with their lives and beliefs. Gandhi’s actions relate to Kantian theory because he never caused physical violence to another and treated every action to its maximum person and also wanted the majority of India to be free from the tyranny of the British.

Gandhi’s was significant in history as he opposed oppression with peaceful protests. Gandhi’s morals satyagraha “Truth force” is what he used to oppose imperialism. The British instead used more than forceful means to inflict their will upon the populace and soon the British morals were tarnished to the whole world. Gandhi’s peaceful protesting ways spread across the world and other protesters took towards Gandhi’s ideas to protest the injustices that befall them in promoting social justice

Gandhi used his philosophy to combat the British imperialists and spread the ideas of social justice. By analyzing what Gandhi stood for we can relate certain values from religions and secular morals can be ascribed to Gandhi and help promote social justice.
