Jonathan Kolia “Jon” Favreau is an American film director, filmmaker, actor, and voice actor. He is known as the director of the Iron Man movies series but has been a talented actor and talented producer since his 90s as a director in various movie TV dramas. In addition to “Iron Man”, he directed “The Jungle Book”, and “American chef”. He directed many famous science fictions and many other genres of movies and acted a lot in the film market. After the video showed to the audience in the ceremony, Tony’s friend James “Rhodey” Rhodes gets spotlighted in the center of the ceremony which emphasizes that he is going to be an important role in this movie. Tony Stark does not show up for his award and his co-worker, Obadiah Stane, shows up to get the award instead of Tony Stark. Obadiah Stane gets the award instead which emphasizes that he is also going to be an important role but because he got the award instead of Tony Stark, it foreshadows that he has a higher chance of becoming a villain. After the award, people now know where Tony has been. Tony Stark was enjoying gambling near the ceremony place. Because Tony Stark is in the center of crowds and surrounded by charming women, audiences realize that Tony leads a loose, dissolute and arrogant life. Not only mise-en-scene but also cinematography is also deeply used in this scene to emphasize which people are important. In the video that showed to audiences at the ceremony, Tony Stark and Obadiah Stane are on the main page of Forbes. To emphasize these two characters, a view starts from zooming in on these two men’s heads to zooming out to a full body shot. This highlights that these two will go against in the later of the movie because they stand back to back. Let’s compare this Iron man with Batman from DC Comics. Batman Begins is a 2005 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman, directed by Christopher Nolan. Batman Begins starts with bats flying in the sky and making a batman sign. After showing audiences that it is about Batman, the movie starts with Batman’s childhood. A child falls into the well and is attacked by bats. With the attack by bats, adult Batman woke up and was in jail. He walks around in the prison, met a villain saying “You are in hell, little man” and is attacked by this villain. However, Batman fights him back and destroyed the gangs in the prison. Because of this brutal fight, the guards dragged Batman back to the prison. Christopher Nolan, the director of Batman Begins, well used mise-en-scene, and cinematography, but the beginning of the movie does not fully make audiences understand who Batman is yet. It is hard to understand who this hero is and hard to predict who the villain is yet. Iron man and Batman Begins to start with different opening scenes. However, what made Iron man becomes a better movie? Secondly, when Tony Stark wakes up inside the Afghan Cave, the director perfectly uses sound and editing to audiences feel how Iron man was born. In this scene, diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound were used simultaneously. The non-diegetic sound was used to show the struggles that Tony Stark has from the pain. A mechanical and strange sound is used to distract audiences from feeling to feel what Tony Stark feels. Also, diegetic sound was used with nondiegetic sound. Tony Stark’s scream and the sound of a bottle or some metallic sound are used externally and internally. With the perfect combination of sound and editing skills, people fully know he survived the death of serious pain and is able to feel what Tony Stark has overcome.
Lastly, the fight scene is incredibly well-directed. The fight scene of Iron man is get praised by a lot of audiences. Iron man makes a Mark-3 suit and fights against the villain which is Iron Monger which Obadiah Stane is on. To make the fight scene intense, the director used mise-en-scene and editing to decorate the scene well. The fight scene starts with Tony Stark talking the heroine to run away from the building that the villain might attack. Perfect editing used by the director shows the scary appearance of the villain. The continuity editing, transition, and sound are used to draw the attention of the audience surprised by the appearance of the villain. First, the heroine walks out of the building and talks with Tony Stark to explain the situation. The phone disconnects making a weird sound which is a diegetic sound. The heroine looks back because of a thundering noise which also is a diegetic sound happening behind her. The camera slowly puts the heroine outside of the angle, and the villain comes out from the ground. Only 30 seconds of the villain’s appearance made the audience wonder about what is going to happen and are amazed by the perfect appearance of the villain. This could happen because of the perfect editing skills that the director used. After the villain comes out from the ground, Tony Stark with an Iron man suit flies from the sky to attack and save the heroine from the Ironmonger. Ironmonger is attacked by Iron man and dragged out to the highway to fight that heroin does not exist. From now, the villain makes civilians in the danger. Ironmonger is on the highway and as soon as it lends on the highway, he attacks an innocent civilian to protect himself. The highway instantly turned into a madhouse because of the villain’s appearance on the highway. He gets up and attacks Iron man, grabs a car that an innocent family in, and tries to throw it at Iron man. Iron man gets up and saves the family inside the car. To avoid danger for innocent people, Iron man makes Ironmonger follow up in the sky and fight. Iron man freezes Ironmonger to make him incompetent. Audiences think that hero defeated the villain but Iron monger survived and attacks Iron man again on the ground. The hero now is in danger but used the heroine to fight back an unbeatable villain. The villain almost wins Iron man but the heroine destroyed the Ironmonger perfectly with the combination of the hero’s power and the heroine’s help. The mise-en-scene, sound, editing, and cinematography are properly distributed to intensify the fight scene and make audiences feel like they are in part of the movie. Ironman's perfect battle scenario has contributed tremendously to the scenario of many hero movies.
To compare the battle scene of Iron man, Batman Begins has a different style of the battle scene. Batman, a hero, is now on the train and fighting with the villain. Christopher Nolan used a non-diegetic sound to make the battle scene feel more intense to the audience. The fight scene is happening fight the played music of a fast tempo. The villain uses a train to destroy the city. Batman has lost the battle with the villain. However, like Iron man, a sidekick helps out batman destroy the railway to stop the train. Because of the help of the sidekick, the villain is flustered and the situation is turned in batman’s favor. Batman destroys the part of the train and escapes, but the villain cannot escape from the danger and dies inside the train. Christopher Nolan well used the mise-en-scene and sound to decorate his movie well, but the impact of the battle scene was not able to fascinate the audience as Iron man did.
In conclusion. Marvel studio and D.C. Comics studio were the top two film companies that fight each other to have better fame in superhero movies. However, with the advent of Iron Man, Marvel gained immense revenues and a good reputation and became a perfect model for superhero movies.
