It is common knowledge that abortions is a touchy subject all over the world. It is an absolute necessity that women have the option of having an abortion. Three important reasons are made for abortion: women suffer when abortion is prohibited, women should have the choice as it’s their body, and women who are raped should be permitted to get an abortion. There are also many other reasons why women should be allowed to get an abortion. Especially when it comes to women’s rights, as these rights can protect women from the effects of having an unplanned pregnancy. Women must have the option to choose whether or not they have an abortion as it is a basic human right.

A world agenda poll found that 44 percent of men and 42 percent of women believed that abortion should be accessible to those who seek it. Before women got the right to choose if they would keep their child, some states didn’t provide abortion, thus requiring women to give birth to their babies. In the 21st century, abortion is still a contentious issue, with millions of people endorsing it and many still not agreeing with it. Every woman has the right to control her body in any way she deems fit, and those rights should not be stripped away by the law. The legalization of abortions is also an essential step to further extending women’s rights. This is a major issue that specifically affects women as men are not directly affected by abortions. Women must have the choice to do as they please with their bodies because it promotes gender equality. It is said that this equality is created due to the legalization of abortions, stripping women of their so-called ‘motherly duties’ that were developed in the early 1900s, when women had minimal rights and were heavily dictated by men. Philosopher Judith Jarvis wrote: “If abortion rights are denied, then a constraint is imposed on women’s freedom to act in a way that is of great importance to them, both for its own sake and for the sake of their achievement of equality”. After all, this debate boils down to more than just abortions itself as it also impacts women’s rights, freedom rights, and gender equality. If abortions were denied to women, they would lose their basic rights as a human and are then forced to carry an unwanted child. Not only must they birth this child, but must also raise, care and provide for them for many years to come due to societal expectations placed upon mothers. Women must have the choice of whether they receive an abortion as, at the end of the day, the fetus is a part of her body, not anyone else’s.

Women have fallen victim to sexual assault for decades. In 2016, at least 50% of women experienced some form of sexual assault over their lifetime. Instances of rape can often cause an unplanned pregnancy, and it was estimated that up to 32,000 women fell pregnant as a result of rape last year. These rates are atrocious. Women should not have to carry a child they didn’t plan, especially in cases where it is a result of inhumane treatment such as rape. This is why we must make sure that every woman has access to safe abortion clinics that provide safe abortion services. The American Medical Association states that “there are approximately 1 million abortions performed annually worldwide”. It is estimated that half of all abortions are performed by women who don’t have access to an abortion clinic. Women have to face the scary possibility of receiving a life-threatening abortion due to the law and expensive clinics. Not only that, but women who have been raped, abused, or neglected may experience a variety of problems, including anxiety and depression, and may also lose their ability to function normally. On top of these psychological effects of sexual abuse, women are also expected to birth a baby that is as a result of the assault. This is purely inhumane and is why not just women, but girls of all ages, should have access to safe clinics, as statistics show that women will most likely perform an abortion illegally if given no choice. Therefore, victims of sexual assault must have access to safe abortion clinics, as not only do they suffer from the psychological effects of the assault, but will also put themselves at physical risk to end the traumatic and unplanned pregnancy.

An unplanned pregnancy can often lead to mothers not being prepared to care for their child. A mother’s financial status is a major factor in the decision-making process when it comes to having an abortion. If the mother is aware of her financial situation, she may feel that she has no choice but to decide on terminating her pregnancy. However, this process is being interrupted by the government stating that there is no legal way to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. This often leads to women either taking the risk of an illegal abortion or birthing an unplanned child into poverty. The result of this is that thousands of kids end up in the foster care system every year and often move around different houses and are never able to call a place home. Kids who end up in this system often experience feelings of neglect, anxiety, and a tendency to partake in deviant behavior. Currently, there are 450, 000 kids in the foster care system, and this number is expected to increase by 100,000 children within the next 10 years if women are forced to birth unplanned babies. Not only are these figures seriously alarming, but the demand for foster carers is becoming increasingly desperate. So not only do mothers struggle to support an unplanned child, but also risk losing their child in a system of nearly 500,000 foster kids. Women should have access to abortions as it’s estimated that one in five births are planned, and that number is planned to rise soon if intervention is not considered.

To conclude, it is evident that women should have access to abortions. Women should have the right to decide if they want to keep their babies or not. Many aspects aid in making this decision, such as financial status, circumstances of sexual assault, women’s rights, gender equality, preventing children from ending up in foster care and minimizing the risk of women performing unsafe abortions. All these aspects are strong and valid reasons why women should have the choice of what they do with their bodies. This must no longer be a debate over whether or not women should have the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, as there are many aspects to the issue that cannot and must not be dictated by a controlling and outdated government.
