Partaking in a hobby that we love to do, regardless of the quality we may produce, can bring us happiness. A hobby, as defined by Oxford English Dictionary is an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure. This means that a person will partake in an activity for satisfaction and enjoyment during their free time. My newest hobby is podcasting. Every day at work, I listen to podcasts to help my day go faster. I currently subscribe to 10 different podcasts that I listen to throughout the week. Every podcast I listen to teaches me something about people and their many walks of life. It also provides me with a new perspective on life.
Podcast allows the listener to hear a person’s story through their own voice. In my opinion, this helps to better form a connection between the host and listener. The perfect podcast would have charismatic, funny host(s) who effortlessly captivates the audience with their stories and commentary. It would have hundreds, maybe thousands of listeners who are interacting back with the hosts and also contributing to the show by spreading the word and sending in feedback and even personal stories. Meanwhile podcasting is a creative process which involves a few different components. The main purpose of podcast is to raise awareness among people. Messages on the important issues and topics can be delivered to people through podcasting or video blogging. Podcasting is a new way to earn money. One can earn good income through subscription if their podcast is good enough and popular. Besides that, podcast enable people to teach others. For instance, courses now are available on podcast and video blogs which was previously available on emails and websites that have unlimited choices. This gives a chance to those who has problem to read to just hear and see the course materials.
Because of the new things I have learned while listening to podcasts and laughs I have shared while listening, I decided to start a podcast with my friend of over 13 years. It is a weekly podcast where we discuss love, life and the pursuit of happiness. We record 2 episodes every other week in my home with our homemade studio. We paid for all of the equipment out of pocket and even an artist for our logo although, we know that there is a very big change that our podcast will not bring in any profit. Luckily, creating a podcast isn’t expensive. You can start with equipment ordered over Amazon like I did. Whether cheap or costly, your equipment will still allow you to reach many listeners across major streaming platforms.
I love podcasting now and it is something I plan to continue doing but there can be disadvantages. For example, my podcast is fairly new so we do not have thousands or even hundreds of listeners. As far as I can tell, mostly family, friends and friends of friends listen in every week to show support. It means a lot that our family and friends enjoy the content I am producing but I do sometimes wish I could be able to reach even an even larger audience. Having a larger listening base, can increase your advertising potential. A popular podcast with a large listening base can sell advertising for other companies or have monthly paid subscribers which can create revenue. Even with that disadvantage, I would still recommend others to try podcasting as a hobby. Even if it isn’t particularly successful, there are still people out there that they can possibly connect with. It can work as a diary or memoir where they can release any thoughts they have.
I would highly recommend that people find at least one hobby that you can explore and enjoy. I find the best way to find a hobby is to simply try something new. Once you find something you love to do and make it your own, you may eventually develop a passion for it. Thankfully, there are many things we can partake in. For example, swimming, cooking, singing or even knitting.
My hobbies are a very important part of my life. I find that they offer me an escape from the regular stresses of life. It gives us something fun to do during our off time and affords us the opportunity to learn new skills.
