I wake, panting for breath. Nightmares, again. Of course, it’s the day of the culling. At least this is the last one. My last day of torture, if I make it that is. I’ve managed so far, I have to make it through now. I check my alarm, 5:00 am. 4 more hours until the scariest moment of my life. One of many.
At 8:00 a.m., I go outside. The streets are so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Silent. I walk to the bus stop to meet my best friend Alex. I see him smiling, as always. Even on the worst of days, he manages to maintain his smile and happiness. “How can you be so eager, I mean you know the tests are today, right?” I ask curiously “What do you mean? There’s nothing to be nervous about, I have been studying all year, every possible scenario, question, and answer mesmerized like the back of my hand. And I’m sure you have too,” he said without looking back. He’s right, I have been studying for 8 months, practicing, testing myself, and preparing. “Well sure,” I say humbly. “It’s nice to know that all the studying will pay off and that I will make it through this one,” he says with the confidence he always has. Alex is the kind of person that is daring and adventurous, whereas I’m kind of the opposite. I am generally introverted and lack self-confidence. Still, I didn’t want to talk about it any longer, knowing we would both ace the tests just like we had every year.
When we got to school, a big banner hung from the school. The banner read “Only the most gifted will survive. TESTS TODAY”
We walked into the hall together we had to listen to the lecture from the principal, Mr. Wilson. He is the most strict, conniving, and cruel principal you will ever meet. He is our principal AND town mayor. We settle into our seats as Mr. Wilson starts the same speech that he does every year.

He stepped down from the podium on which he was standing and walked off. A trail of security guards with weapons followed close behind.
