Technically Rome was a democratic republic however, only the Roman citizens could enjoy to the fullest this system. Through its conquests Rome added millions of people who were not considered citizens; hence Rome was comparatively governed by few people (Morey, 1901).
As the class of Roman citizens increased gradually a group of few people started to hold the real political power. This group of people was known as the new nobility or the optimizes and they held the office of consul and praetor. These people were seen as nobles and their families were distinguished by the right of setting up the ancestral image (Morey, 1901). In spite of the fact that the system of Rome allowed Roman citizens to hold office, the new nobility used its wealth to influence the election and to keep office for them. A system was the main political power is held by few people resembles an aristocratic republic, which shows that they were falling in to their old and unjust ways which actively demonstrates one of the negative effects of the Roman conquest (Morey, 1901).
The more conquests Rome was making the more the characteristics of the republic were passing away and being replaced by an empire. Moreover, the Roman government was losing aspects that made Rome have political stability. In fact, Rome was no longer integrating its new subjects within its state. Rome was also losing the patriotism she once had and most of the rulers had more personal interest rather than the interest of the country at large (Morey, 1901).
Another negative effect of the Roman conquests was the divisions of the Roman people in something similar to classes. The first class was the senatorial order, which were men with political power; the second class was the equestrian order which contained people with financial power (Morey, 1901). Then there was the great mass of the city population, who were the poor artisans, then came the poor country farmers who had lost their land to the rich creditors. Outside the Roman domain were the Latin colonists who had similar conditions of the Roman peasants. In the provinces most of the people were excluded from the rights and privileged of citizens. Finally, the slaves were below all the classes and particularly, field slaves lived in miserable conditions (Morey, 1901).
Hence, in conclusion, I can say that the Roman conquests had negative effects on the common people as they had lost their power to hold office and as they lived in hard conditions.
