If Singapore decides to water down on mass sports participation and focus on producing world class champions instead, Singaporeans may be unable to keep fit as a result and have a healthy body. With production of elite athletes and watering down mass participation, there would be much better results that would in turn be aligned with Vision2030. Being able to have world class talents to hit the target mark set would tremendously help our country become a powerhouse in the Asian Sporting Scene. A famous win such as Joseph Schooling’s would slowly be a norm as it would mean that the local sporting scene is used to winning accolades. However, the downside would be that local Singaporeans who are not trained and developed to be elite athletes would suffer as since they do not have the required skillset for participating in sports, they would be turned away if they wanted to join. Since Singapore already has a very small human capital compared to other countries this would make it difficult for NSA to spot more talents to join the national team and lesser encouragement for public who wants to go professional thus limiting the talent pool.
This would also cause our nation’s youth to not be as physically healthy due to the focus on creating elite athletes. As much as the local sports scene would be successful, the change will result in citizens like us to be restricted to few activities to keep fit.
Many would lose the opportunity to try out new sports or continue their current sports due to the lack of facilities and support from government. Without sports facilities provided to the public, health problems and concerns would start to rise. Singaporean consume food nowadays are high in sugar, salt and fats. Food such as bubble teas contain 92g of sugar, about three times of sugar content more than a can of Coke (CNA, 2019). Lack of exercise would lead to many health issues such as obesity and diabetes. Singaporean are also in the fast pace industry where not many would spend their precious time to look for exercise means to keep their body fit, thus lacking of sports facilities means less convenient for more Singaporean to go to a nearby sports facility to work out.
With health problems rising, Government must spend more funds to build more clinic and hospital to help ease the public’s concern. More health professional to hire from overseas as well due to the lack of health professional locally (The Straits Times, 2019), (SEOW, 2019).
Focusing on elites only and not educating the public about sports may lead to public being ignorant about the sports world. For example, currently we have inclusive sports festival where we use Sports to educate people about people who are special individuals where we modify sports to suit their needs and help them to do physical therapy. If we were to abandon these events, the public may not know about their peoples that need the society help and they would be outcasted (Lee, 2019).
Thus, I feel that Singapore should continue with the mass sports participation instead of focusing on producing world class champions as it would be both educational and helpful to the society in terms of knowledge of the public and the growth of the industry in Singapore.
