This paper is to relate communication concepts that we have discussed in class and the textbook to a movie of my choice. Specifically, I chose a movie called “Tell Me How I Die” to do for the movie night essay. Not only am I telling what this movie is about, but I will also analyze two separate concepts that we have discussed and show how they each relate to this movie. The two concepts that we have discussed in class and I will be showing how they relate include self-fulfilling prophecy and nonverbal communication. I chose these two concepts because I have always been interested in self-fulfilling prophecy and nonverbal communication, and this essay allowed me to educate myself on these things even further.

For this movie night essay, I have chosen a movie called “Tell Me How I Die”. I chose this movie because I felt it gave a clear understanding and representation of the two concepts that I am discussing. This movie was released in 2016 and directed by D.J. Viola. In “Tell Me How I Die”, a group of college students takes part in an experimental drug study. While taking part in this study an unexpected side effect starts to give them terrifying visions of their selves being murdered. It just so happens that these strange visions begin to come true. As each of them begins to panic and try to plan a way to prevent their death, they realize that the killer is among them and shares their ability to see the future. The only problem is that he seems to be one step ahead of them every time in their effort to survive.

One of the concepts that I have selected to compare to “Tell Me How I Die” includes self-fulfilling prophecy. This concept refers to the socio-psychological phenomenon of someone 'predicting' or expecting something. This “prediction” comes true simply because one believes it will, and the resulting behaviors align to fulfill those beliefs. This suggests that peoples' beliefs influence their actions thus influencing what happens as a result. The principle behind this miracle is that people think of consequences regarding people or events, based on their previous knowledge toward that specific subject. These self-fulfilling prophecies can be applied in both negative and positive situations.

The other concept that I have selected to compare to “Tell Me How I Die” includes nonverbal communication. This concept refers to the sending of messages or signals through a nonverbal method such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and the distance between two individuals. This form of communication can communicate more meaning than verbal communication and most peoples’ trust forms during nonverbal communication rather than verbal communication. It also includes the use of visual cues such as body language, distance, and physical appearance. Culture plays a large role in nonverbal communication, and it is one aspect that helps to influence how to learn more about this form of communication.

In “Tell Me How I Die”, there are several ways that a self-fulfilling prophecy is used as part of the main plot. The storyline is based on the ability to see into the future from each character’s point of view. All of these individuals suffer what seem like very painful deaths to me, including suffocating from hydrochloric gas, being burned, stabbed, or even beingheaded. The phenomenon occurs before the actual deaths because each character that takes this new experimental drug sees their death as a visual side effect of this drug. It could be speculated that these visuals seen by the individuals created the beliefs that in turn caused each of the individuals to have different actions than they would have, giving way to an alternate situation that was ultimately death in this case.

In “Tell Me How I Die”, there are several ways that nonverbal communication is used as a means of visual representation. This concept refers to the sending of messages or signals through a nonverbal method such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and the distance between two individuals. This can be seen between the characters in several scenes in the movie as a separate means of communication other than speaking. One scene shows a male and female using close distance and gestures rather than using verbal communication, but the intended signal is obvious. In this movie, another way that nonverbal communication is used is by showing each character’s death and foreshadowing it without actually saying what is going to happen.

Although “Tell Me How I Die” may have been a bit gruesome and dim, it was a perfect one to do for the movie night essay. Not only did I tell what this movie is about, but I will also analyze two separate concepts that we have discussed and show how they each relate to this movie including self-fulfilling prophecy and nonverbal communication. This shows how movies can be related to concepts that we have learned over the semester and gives us more insight into how we can relate these to our everyday lives.
