Racism, discrimination, color, equality, and racial justice are all words that are related to racial equity. There is a significant quote by CSI President Glenn Harris “Racial equity is about applying justice and a little bit of common sense to a system that’s been out of balance. When a system is out of balance, people of color feel the impacts most acutely, but, to be clear, an imbalanced system makes all of us pay.” This statement is significant because in true honesty racial equity refers to justice. Many people might get equality and equity confused but they are not the same thing. Equality allows people to have sameness while equity provides them with fairness to play on the same levels of life. What racial equity means to me is giving everyone the same chances and advantages to be able to close the gaps of race that society has brought upon them. In other words, one’s success should not be determined by status or color.

Racial equity is essential in our communities and world. The very first encounter with racial equity I had was when I realized how proud I was to be a Hispanic being born and raised in America. Later as I grew, I realized that not all people were able to have the same playing field because others had way more advantages than certain people. Everyone perceives America as this great country full of opportunities where you can come to be prosperous and have unlimited freedom but to be frankly honest, that is not the case. Certain people such as Hispanics, African-Americans, Asian, etc. who are “welcomed” into this country are looked at and sadly treated differently than their white counterparts. From living in a community full of minorities I am able to see the thirst this world has for racial equity.

The quote mentioned previously by Glenn Harris is a true statement; everyone in the long run will be affected because we are not able to spread advantages and become successful as a whole. Some people feel the need to limit certain people that do not fit into their category which does not allow us to prosper as a country. People of color tend to feel this way more than any other race in America. However, being of Hispanic background and culture I have gone through my fair share of experiences as a minority. People should confidentially feel accepted because of their work ethic, not because of the color they are or are not. No one should feel superior to another simply because of race. While all races and cultures should be honored, race does not define us; it simply allows us the chance to know our background. On the other hand, work ethic is something that should define us because we determine it ourselves by the work we dedicate every single day. Why should someone be looked down upon for something that they do not have control over like the color of their skin? If America truly wants to become “great” again we need to learn how to set racial barriers aside.

Living in a minority community increases my desire for racial equity. Oak Cliff is an area in the southern sector of Dallas that is well known for having mostly socioeconomically disadvantaged people and high crime rates. Being raised there made me go through struggles and put me at a disadvantage that other people did not have to even think about. I strongly believe that the key to being a triumphant nation and having a prosperous future is to break down all racial barriers and work united to try and bring this country back to the land of true equal opportunity. By setting barriers aside we are able to close that gap that society has brought upon us and obtain justice for all.

If we do not get these barriers fixed they will find a way to trouble our journey of success. This country needs to become a country where everyone is able to fairly run the same race and have the same opportunity as during a track contest. Running many miles on a track you realize that the lanes have different start lines because everyone's lane is their own course and has different loopholes, yet all have the same destination and finishing line just like life with people wanting to achieve success. Racial equity should be celebrated to bring unification and give everyone a fair shot at success. If we are called “The United States of America” then we should manifest unity because it is in our name. Our country might have many scars but the best way to mend these wounds is to create an environment where all races and creeds can interact together on a daily basis to better understand each other and in that manner achieve true success.
